Dangerous goods boxes: Safe shipping of hazardous substances and goods

Did you know that spray cans, batteries, fragrance oils or lighters are already considered dangerous goods and require special dangerous goods packaging?

Dangerous goods are preparations (mixtures, blends, solutions) and objects that contain substances which, due to their nature, their physical or chemical properties or their condition during transport, may pose certain risks to public safety or order, in particular to the general public, to important common goods and to the life and health of humans, animals and other property, and which are to be classified as dangerous goods on the basis of legal regulations.

Furthermore, the term dangerous goods includes not only substances but also products such as ammunition, equipment, components and the like.

Which substances and objects are to be considered dangerous are defined, among other things, by the Chemicals Act and the Dangerous Goods Ordinance. Dangerous goods law distinguishes between nine classes, subdivided into 13 subclasses. Of these, these are the most frequently shipped and require dangerous goods cartons as outer packaging:

Dangerous goods classes 1 to 9:

Class 1: Explosive substances: rockets, firecrackers

Class 2: compressed, liquefied or dissolved gases and gaseous substances: paint sprays, helium, spray cans

Class 3: Flammable liquids: fuels, paints, alcohol, perfume

Class 4: Flammable solids: rubber residues, matches, sulphur, white phosphorus, coal, sodium

Class 5: Flammable (oxidising) substances: Hydrogen peroxide, potassium chlorate, sodium chlorate (weed ex), fertilisers containing ammonium nitrate, hardener for two-component lacquers, hardener for polyester resin

Class 6: Toxic and infectious substances: hydrogen cyanide (hydrocyanic acid), arsenic, pesticides.

Class 7: Radioactive substances

Class 8: Corrosive substances: batteries, acids, alkalis, cleaning agents

Class 9: Miscellaneous dangerous substances and articles: dry ice, asbestos, lithium batteries, airbags

Our special hazardous goods packaging is suitable for all these goods to ensure safe shipping.

Dangerous goods boxes made of corrugated board according to 4G/4GV: Tested and certified

Dangerous goods packaging for hazardous goods is made of 2-wall cardboard of very good and firm quality (kraft liner paper). They are adapted to the load of the goods to be transported and have been tested according to current regulations.

In the so-called Cobb method, the water absorption capacity of the cardboard is tested, whereby the water resistance must not exceed 155 g/m² after 30 min. The 4G test additionally includes a drop test of the filled dangerous goods cartons from different drop heights. Very dangerous goods of packing group I (X) are dropped from 180 cm onto the corner and thus the weakest point of the carton, less dangerous goods of packing group II (Y) from 120 cm and slightly dangerous goods of packing group III (Z) from only 80 cm. The dangerous goods packaging must not show any damage and no filling material must escape from the inner packaging, then the drop test is passed.

Compared to 4G, the 4G drop test is carried out with more sensitive inner containers, for example made of glass. To ensure that the goods remain undamaged, the maximum permitted filling weights are significantly lower.

Worldwide shipping of dangerous goods packaging

BOXXCO's dangerous goods boxes can be used as composite packaging with metal or plastic containers. If the cardboard boxes are used with other inner packagings than the tested ones, re-testing is necessary, which we will gladly carry out for you.

When shipping, it must be obvious to outsiders that dangerous goods are being shipped. Our dangerous goods boxes already contain the UN marking with details of the manufacturer as well as the goods being shipped, and safety labels must also be attached in accordance with the product's safety data sheet. The shipping route plays an important role here: stricter rules apply for airmail than for transport by land or water. BOXXCO's dangerous goods packaging can be used internationally for road transport (ADR), as well as for sea transport (IMDG Code, ADNR), rail transport (RID) or air transport (ICAO-TI, IATA). It should be noted that the boxes are securely closed with a closed 6-strip closure (H-closure) with adhesive filament tapes.
